Sell your Sterling silver and silver plate pieces for money in Chicagoland

The Man of Silver is an expert at purchasing silver and silver plate items that you wish to remove from your home. Selling your silver and silver plate pieces can be a useful and effective method to clear out unwanted items from your house, get extra money, or part with inherited pieces that may not have sentimental significance if you’re seeking ways to make money and declutter.
Even though silver plate objects lack the inherent worth of pure silver, they nevertheless have some value due to their artistic appeal or the materials (brass or copper) from which they were manufactured. The Man of Silver will make sure everything goes smoothly. I visit your house to assess your silver or silver plate items, after which I make you a fair offer based on several variables, including the state of the market, and then pay you on the spot.

Sterling silver or silver plate

With over 25 years in the jewelry business, The Man of Silver knows what markings to look for to determine if a piece is silver or silver plate. I apply Five Assessments starting with the most reliable, the markings. I will buy your gold jewelry, silver, silver plate pieces. I will also buy your costume jewelry, fashion jewelry or luxury watches. I promise to provide you with a fair price, as my reviews will attest to.

The difference between Sterling silver and silver plate

Sterling Silver is a solid alloy consisting of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% additional metals, mostly copper. It is referred to as sterling silver. The amount of silver in this alloy is identified by the “925” stamp.
Objects that are silver plate have a thin layer of silver applied to them that are made of base metals like copper, brass, or nickel silver are called silver plate. Because sterling silver has a larger silver content and a more solid composition than silver-plated objects, sterling silver items are generally more valuable. The price of silver on the market at any given moment has an impact on the value of sterling silver.
Sterling Silver tarnishes much more slowly than silver-plated objects, even though both can tarnish with time. Sterling Silver can maintain its best appearance with routine cleaning and upkeep. Silver plate objects especially with frequent usage, the thin layer of silver (are approximately 1%) may wear off and tarnish more easily.

The difference between silver plate and silver plated

The terms “silver plate” and “silver plated” both describe objects with a thin layer of silver applied to their surfaces, but there is a slight difference. Silver plate describes objects that are composed of a base metal such as copper, brass, or nickel silver and have a thicker covering of silver applied to them. The silver is mechanically bonded or electroplated onto the base metal. While silver plated usually refers to an object that has a thin layer of silver applied to it. When compared to silver plate, this layer is typically thinner. This process is usually done by electroless plating.

Explaining the Sterling Silver and silver plate buying and selling process

I understand that people want to earn as much money as they can when they sell their silver or silver plate items. I do not look at each piece of silver as a transaction but as developing a long-term relationship with a customer. For this reason, I start with an explanation to new and old customers alike. Many people mistakenly believe they have 100 ounces of silver if they weigh their piece of silver on a kitchen scale and it reads 100 ounces, but in reality, they only have approximately 84 net troy ounces, or ozt. of actual silver.

  • I take the time to explain the difference between a Troy Ounce and a regular Ounce:
The Troy ounce is part of the Troy weight system, which dates back to the Roman monetary system.
  • The Troy system is commonly used for measuring precious metals and gemstones.
  • 1 Troy ounce is equivalent to approximately 31.1035 grams.
  • The regular ounce is part of the avoirdupois weight system, which is commonly used in the United States and other parts of the world for everyday measurements.
  • 1 Avoirdupois ounce is equivalent to approximately 28.3495 grams.
  • The regular ounce is typically denoted by the symbol “oz.”
What 925 means when it comes to Sterling Silver 92.5% purity:
  • Sterling silver is an alloy made up of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper or zinc.
  •  Sterling silver pieces are stamped with 925 to mark their authenticity.
  • Sterling Silver is 92.5% pure and silver plate is closer to only 1% pure.

Preserving and conserving silver and silver plate pieces

Most silver brokers purchase silver and silver plate items intending to sell them as scrap to be melted down. I approach things differently at the Man of Silver. Items that have inherent value due to the manufacturer or the craftsmanship in their design, in my opinion, when possible, should be preserved and conserved. The Man of Silver makes every effort to locate a new home for silver pieces that may no longer suit your tastes but rather someone else’s.  I have a booth and two showcases at a local antique mall. I have found new homes for over 200 flatware sets across the United States as well as thousands of pieces of jewelry.

Chicago and the surrounding suburbs

Every day I work with clients in the comfort of their homes, offices, or banks in the counties of Cook, Lake, Kane, McHenry, and DuPage. I also see clients in my office in Lincolnwood, Illinois. The Man of Silver has a family tradition in the Chicago area of serving customer’s needs. My family has helped tens of thousands of happy customers over the past 60 years. I am committed to giving my customers the best price on the silver or silver-plated pieces that they are selling. Place your trust in a local company with roots in Chicagoland.
